Etsy Finds and ComFest!

I have been busily preparing for ComFest. The 3 day music and art festival starts on Friday in Columbus' Goodale Park and continues through Sunday evening. On Monday I had an idea for a new necklace design, so I made it. Because I have so much free time...HA! I don't know what I was thinking. Sometimes I just have to act on my creative urges. I made 5 of the necklaces in different colors. They are beautiful - - sleek and modern, just my style. I'm so glad I made them. If there are any left, I'll list them in my Etsy shop when I return. My truck is PACKED. I downsized from a Titan to a Jeep. This is easily the most efficient packing I have ever done. Not an inch wasted!

In the midst of packing today, I checked my email to find that my Amethyst Lantern was featured in the Etsy Finds! Cool! (Thanks, Christine!) My Happy Dance was cut short when I realized that I really need to put my shop in Vacation Mode for this festival. It's too busy for me. Hmmm, dilemma... I'll ride the increased views until tomorrow, then put it in Vacation Mode before I leave.

Homeschooling

I never thought I would end up here. The situation at my son's school worsened. His self esteem had hit an all time low. He ran out of the school building crying and was caught in the parking lot. My husband and I decided that for his safety and mental health we needed to remove him from school.

This happened right before Spring Break. We took a lovely vacation to Arizona, where my sister and parents have bought a vacation home together. It was very relaxing. It also gave me time to organize my homeschooling plan. I had already considered it as an option, so I had an online curriculum chosen. I gave Nathan a few tests to determine at which levels we should start.

We are just over a week into homeschooling. It has been an eye-opener. My son could have gone 3 times as fast in his reading/phonics, but he requires remedial attention in math. News to me. We started on the First Grade Level for every subject. At this rate, he will finish the First Grade Language Arts this summer. We went back to Kindergarten Level Math. He'll finish that this coming week. Then we'll continue with First Grade work, going at a much slower pace than the other subjects. We're wrapping up a few items that he hasn't learned (from us) in 1st and 2nd Grade Science, then in the Fall, we'll start 3rd Grade Science. I LOVE that I can tailor this to his needs and strengths. At school, they were learning about Living vs. Non-Living things, but he wants to start Chemistry! Also, he gets to do Science and Art every day instead of once a week.

It is an incredible amount of work to set up the lesson plans each day, but I'm finding my groove. We're having tons of fun! Nathan is so much more relaxed. We try to make it to the playground each day at 3pm. His interaction with other children is much better. I think he's not drained and as a result he can enjoy their company.

The night after our first day homeschooling was the first decent night's sleep I'd had in ages.

That Old Werewolf Story

Today my 5 year old was playing with models of the Earth and the Moon on strings. He swung them around quickly and said, "This is what happened when the Moon broke out of orbit!" My husband asked him, "What do you think would happen if there were no moon?" My son thought for a moment then answered, "There would be no tides. They would have to get rid of that old werewolf story, and it would be darker at night."

I just loved that.

Twice Exceptional

As some of you may know, in December my son received a provisional dual diagnosis of gifted/PDD-nos. Children who are gifted and learning disabled are often referred to as Twice Exceptional. I've found many wonderful parents and professionals while searching for "Twice Exceptional" or "#2E" on Twitter. Last night I saw a post that disturbed me:

"What's up with "Sid the Science Kid"? Is this show abt those "Twice
Exceptional" kids? Cuz smthng is not right abt the kids in that
show." (sic)

We love Sid. The kids are creative and diverse. It is disturbing to me that my son will have to deal with the idea that "something is not right" with him. He's fine, thank you. In fact, he would be great if we weren't trying to pound his square peg self into the round hole of public school. I've never understood why people like to flaunt their ignorance. My initial response was to fire back with either a nasty rebuttal or a high road educational response. I don't like to act too quickly, though, so I took a moment and looked at the poster's website. It was dedicated to his 4 year old daughter who died recently of cancer. Now I understand his interest in Sid the Science Kid. I let it slide and counted my blessings.

Hello! I have really, really been trying to find time to blog. I took most of December off already and have decided to just pick it up again in January. I need a break! My studio and house look like a tornado hit. I apologize to those curators whose treasuries I did not post. I'm will start again with the January treasuries. We have a lot of new info on my son. I need to sift through to decide what is and what isn't appropriate to share in the blogosphere. Candor on other blogs has greatly helped me, so I'm considering it. What do your kids do in Kindergarten?

Apparently my son spends the majority of his morning doing work sheets, then they go to lunch. I think they have a special class after lunch (gym, spanish, music, etc.) After that they have a 15 minute recess (yes, only 15 minutes for 5 year olds AND if he doesn't finish his work sheets, he's not allowed to go out for recess). Then they have a snack. Aside from the problems that you've already noticed above, snack time is an issue with me. Here's why:

1. The children are forced to watch TV. WHY? Once my son was forced to watch Sponge Bob. Friday my son was forced to watch Kung Fu Panda. Kung Fu Panda is rated PG! My husband and I had already previewed it and deemed it was too violent and too "old" for our son. My son told his teacher he did not want to watch it, but he was not allowed to do something else. WHY? How on earth does this fit into a Kindergarten curriculum? My son gets in trouble for defending himself against a bully. Then the teacher shows a movie about hitting. Way to go! There's consistency for you! The teacher had the nerve to ask if there are consequences in our home for hitting. It is the school that is inconsistent!

2. We aren't allowed to provide my son's snack. We give him healthy foods. Apparently all of the other kids eat Ho-ho's. Every parent brings a snack for the class once a month. The school told us that it has to be pre-packaged, individual servings. Guess what that means? No fruit, no veggies, just junk. We sent Cheez-its the last time. At least they're baked. Crimony. It's no wonder obesity is such a huge issue here.

I would love to hear some feedback on this. Please comment with your experiences and opinions.

My 5 year old is full of them! This morning's question was: How does water put out fire?
Good one for 7 o'clock in the morning! I am not a scientist. I have a Liberal Arts degree for a reason. I have to say that I am proud of myself for answering correctly (cuts off the oxygen supply and reduces the temperature). I did tell him that I would check online to make sure and give him a definitive answer this afternoon. He already knows about elements and compounds, so he understands what oxygen is. I am sure I did not know that at 5. He's going to keep me on my toes!

Discovery Kids Becoming The Hub

We love Nick Jr. ! Nick Jr. has wonderful educational shows geared at Preschool and Kindergarten children. There are NO COMMERCIALS! How wonderful is that? Well, my son is getting older. He is outgrowing many of their shows. We have searched and searched for shows that are educational and age-appropriate. PBS Kids, of course, has great morning and afternoon shows. Nathan enjoys Arthur, Word Girl, The Electric Company and Super Why. His favorite is Fetch! We had nothing to watch during Prime Time as a family. Then we found Discovery Kids. He loves Scout's Safari and Adventure Camp. These are fun for all of us to watch and are educational. We have adjusted to him seeing some commercials. Well, I just found out that on October 10, Discovery Kids becomes The Hub. The Hub is a partnership between The Discovery Channel and Hasbro. That's right, Hasbro. The toy company. Get ready for ads disguised as entertainment. Their new lineup includes: GI Joe (violent), Strawberry Shortcake (insipid), Transformers (violent), some Japanese anime (violent) , among others. Not the quality lineup I was hoping for. Great. Thanks a lot Discovery Channel. I saw that Adventure Camp is staying. Can you maybe throw us bone and include something else educational for kids? How about Crash, Bang, Splat! or Scout's Safari, or the Myth Busters Kid's show? Please?

Redshirting Boys for Kindergarten

The problems that my son has had starting Kindergarten, have made me think about the issue of "Redshirting." That means voluntarily holding your child back. Because of their slower social and fine motor development, it is almost always boys who are redshirted. If my son weren't so intelligent and curious, we may have considered that as an option. However, we decided that on top of being academically bored, he's a big kid. He would completely dwarf any child in a Pre-K class. Many people redshirt their sons to give them this physical advantage. I don't agree with that.

Nathan's first Kindergarten class (we just switched) had 6 six-year olds in a class of 22 (27%...much higher than 9%, which is the national average)! Something to keep in mind is that I was 5 when I started first grade! My questions are:

Is Kindergarten not aimed at 5 year olds anymore?
Is it truly the new first grade?
Are we aiming Kindergarten at girls and excluding boys?
Shouldn't Kindergarten suit the needs of the entire normal range of children who are 5 at the beginning of the school year?
If this trend continues, will most boys be forced to redshirt because they are now 18 months younger than others in the class?

It is a trend that I can't see continuing. I'm starting to consider that it may be better to have separate boy and girl Kindergarten classes.
Perhaps the program needs to adjust, not the children?

Although I love all of the fabulous treasuries that I've been in, they are really overtaking my blog. As a result, I've decided to add a new column on the left, which lists the current treasuries that include my items. I hope that this will make the actual blog posts easier to read. The pictures of the treasuries click through to them. I will still post any of the treasuries that I make in this central area. I would love any feedback on this new layout!

Labor Day

Ah, what a beautiful day! We started the day by driving to Paintsville Lake. We walked over the dam and walked a lovely nature trail. My son collected bird feathers. When we returned, I found my items in 4 new treasuries! After I blog about these, we're hitting the pool. We've had to use the solar cover because of the cool nights we've had, but it's still wonderful!

Love is the Key

Snuggling with my son last night, I was thinking about how he is calmed by a hug and a soft voice. When we changed his Kindergarten class, he showed a remarkable improvement. His new teacher is amazingly compassionate. When he has difficulty, she takes the time to help him work through it calmly. She always has a hug for him. He is so much happier and so are we. I made the above treasury to reflect my feelings.

Kindergarten Update

Well Kindergarten hadn't been going well. My son was in trouble nearly every day. On the days that he hadn't gotten in trouble, he would come home and cry because he worked so hard to hold himself together during school that he just broke down when he got home. It was breaking my heart. We ended up having him evaluated for sensory processing disorder. Yep. He has problems with his vestibular. It involves hearing and balance. His school decided that they had too many children and started another kindergarten class. We moved him to the new class so that he could have a fresh start. We met his teacher today. She seems wonderful! She really listened to our concerns. She also has a "cozy corner." This will be very helpful with Nathan. Sometimes he needs a quiet refuge when he gets over-stimulated. I'm really optimistic!

My team, Etsy Project Embrace (teamepe), has a treasury challenge on now. The theme is "Imagine." I've decided to enter this collection that I made: "Imagine...endless energy!" You can read in to it whatever you like. I started with the idea of wanting more energy. I'm a bit stressed and feeling run down right now. I think most people would like to have more energy. As I worked on it, though, I began to interpret energy on a number of levels, most notably as in our need to find energy sources other than oil. I try to include about 2/3 team members. I like to leave the other 3rd open to those outside of the team, to help spread the word. I hope you enjoy it!

We had such a busy weekend! My son had 12 pages of homework over the weekend. Doesn't that seem like a lot? I don't remember working like this in Kindergarten. I keep hearing, "Kindergarten is the new first grade." I guess so...

Also, I was working on a custom order for a customer. She wanted a set of small light catchers in the colors of the Chakras, to assist with her meditation. What a great idea! I made them today. They look fabulous and she's excited about them! I think I may offer this as a gift package.

Well, I sent my little boy off to Kindergarten again. They have a drop-off. A teacher gets the child out of the car and is supposed to walk him to the cafeteria, where his teacher will collect her students and walk them down to class. The teacher got him out of the car and just sort of nudged him in the direction of the cafeteria. I pulled in to a parking space to watch. He looked so confused, but finally went in. With really little kids, it is so important that that things happen the way they are told it would happen. Tomorrow I'll let him get out of the car by himself and walk in on his own. At least he'll know what to expect. I hope it went Ok today.

Today is my son's first day of Kindergarten. He's gone to preschool since he was 2, but this is his first full-day of school. I hope he does well. I think he'll love it. He's completely bored here. It will be so nice for him to get a fresh injection of information and stimulation. I am really looking forward to having time to work while not feeling guilty about it! My time with my son when he is home will be just for him (and maybe some of that housework I'm horribly behind on...).

Project Embrace Treasury

One of my wonderful teammates, simplysuzula, made a treasury ( Called " ~~~Thanx~~~")with many of the fabulous members of Etsy Project Embrace. You can read my post about the team here. This treasury shows just a small sampling of the artists (and vintage and supplies sellers) who dedicate their time and/or money to the American Cancer Society to help fund cancer research and to provide assistance to those who have been affected by cancer. You can view many more items by searching HERE. MyKiku Flower Suncatcher was included. Earlier I had specified that $5 from the Kiku flowers would be donated. I have changed that to : any item of mine tagged "teamepe" will have 3% of the selling price donated. This has really allowed me to offer more items (most of my items, in fact) and has increased my ability to donate.

Today via the forums I found out that Etsy has made the Treasuries searchable. This is wonderful! No more wondering where hits on an item may have come from. Locked Out and 4 Treasuries!

What a day! My husband came home early this afternoon to have lunch. My son and I had already eaten and were in the back swimming. After about half an hour, my husband came out to say "bye" and that he was returning to work. About 10 minutes after that I went to get something inside. The door was locked! Then I tried the front door and checked all of the ground floor windows. We were locked out! Thank goodness we keep the sunscreen on the patio and that I hadn't locked my car and keep water inside! He finally came home around 4:30. My son and I were bored and hiding in the shade. Even with sunscreen we can't be out all day. Now we're relieved to be in safe and sound. My husband is cooking dinner as we speak... :)

Back from Vacation

I've just returned from a 2 week road trip to Colorado with my husband, 5 year old son, and our dog. I'm happy to report that we still love each other! I'll write more about the trip in a later post. I just couldn't wait to get my Etsy shop up again. Freshly inspired by the beautiful canyons we visited, I decided to try my hand at curating a treasury. I chose to include many of my new friends on the Etsy Project Embrace team. They have been so kind to include me in many of theirs. Here is "Canyon Embrace"...enjoy!

I have been keeping my eyes open for a team to join on Etsy. I'm not much of a rah-rah-ree person, so a lot of the teams I looked at didn't seem like a match for me. A little while ago, RoughMagicCreations included me in a treasury of hers. You can read the post for it here. She noted that many of the featured artists were members of Etsy Project Embrace. I looked it up and was intriqued. Project Embrace was started to "create awareness and support for people who have been diagnosed with Cancer." Many members of the team donate a percentage of their sales to the American Cancer Society. I thought that the mixture of community and cause would be right for me. I've decided to do donate $5.00 from any item with my new Kiku Flower motif on it. I have a Fused Light Catcher shown above and am working on a candle holder and 3 colors of necklaces. They will be available later this week. A lantern design will follow in mid-July (after ComFest). You can search Etsy for members' goods by typing the term "teamepe" into the search bar.

This is quite lovely. It has the colors that I think of as the combination for this season, beige and aqua. It is such a nice combination that speaks of soft sand and cool water. This treasury, "Spiral," was curated by ElementalHandcrafts. These are wonderful selections! My brand new Spiral Sun Suncatcher was included. I'm especially proud of the photo. It was taken with the morning sun shining throught the center of the suncatcher. I think it really shows how beautifully these glow.
